View Full Version : Your first LN2 overclocking in life? How it was.
I'm interested how you people started LN2 OC, very first time?
Photos welcome.

Was doing dry ice for a long time. Finally got an affordable dewar as I was still a student. Put my QX6700 under it on a DFI P965 Dark using an aluminum pot. Was hooked since then.

my 1st attempt was on a Asus Commando, i had done very well on Dice then went to try LN2 and couldn't reach to where i had been on Dice, found out the caps were freezing and it became unstable. Switched over to a TA785GE 128M with a Sempron 140 and did pretty good... Then switched to a Biostar 890FXE with a X2 555 BE and did well i guess with a 6015.58 mhz
hope to do some more damage soon on LN2.

Took my phenom II 555 x4 cold at a friend's house thanks to Pat (Deux). My UD5P ran like a champ and I got some decent scores with a max cpu z around 6.8ghz.
Been cold after that with gpu's and such. Got some solid results on my sb with a gtx 280. 115k...on an asus board. :chair: :D

My first LN2 adventure was during E8500 craziness, I remember DUCK did 6.3 GHz (very beginning of C0) and I got from RMA really good E8500 which did on SS (-33*C) 5.4 GHz 01 SE and 5.5 GHz SuperPI 32M so my friend from Asus Poland offered to try it on LN2. He brought his friends F1 EE pot, dewar from Asus and we started OC, after 10 minutes we got almost 6.2 GHz which was I think 3th result then on E8500 but after 15 minutes CPU died.

My first try was not very successful. It takes a few full dewars to get the hang of it. I first tried this past October on 980x & gtx 480. No good results to speak of, but a week later gtx 580 came out and I never looked back:D
My advice to anyone venturing into the LN2 game would be to keep trying....the first time usually isn't the best.

I started on high end air around 2003 , then moved to Dry Ice with a Kayl Dice Pot (from Team Australia) around 2004 , my very first experience with LN2 was with a kingpin F1 EE LN2 Pot around 2006-2007 , and last the mighty kingpin Gemini LN2 Pot wich its my current CPU pot along side my Tek9s Slims and Fat. I have been around quite some time now :D and the years had come by real quick.
My first LN2 experienced that popped my LN2 cherry around 2006-2007 was on a Asus P5B-Deluxe P965 and a Core 2 Duo E6600 Conroe wich was a very bad clocker cpu no matter volts or temperatures it hit a wall.
Guys who remember the good old days of the first and old Clock Generator Software and old Memset with Rivatuner take a closer look at the old Icons on the screenshoot of that windows , lol im going down the memory lane , good old days are gone :/

I got in to the game much later than most. With my first DI experience being last year with some tiny 2" pot that really didnt do too bad with i7 920 as far as temps went.
OCF had their benching party last november is when I got my first taste of the LN2. And thanks to Dejo, icebob, brolloks, and a few others help on our team, as well as a nice UD3P and 5.3Ghz+ 920 it was all down hill from there.
Since Im on SB now, its SS and only LN2 on the GPUs.

My first LN2 was last weekend, started off by pouring for a team mate chasing a PC04 Fusion cup, on my suggestion he turned the stock heatsink into a ghetto ln2 pot with an ice cream carton and hot glue.
After that we strapped my new (used twice on dice) tek9fat to a 4850 and had some fun. It's going to be hard to go back to dice now.
Strangely the insulation on the tek9fat shrunk, cracked, and pulled open 1/4-3/8" gaps in itself.

First Solo Dice
I think it was this 3000+ Venice, but I'm not entirely sure. Maybe 99% sure. Anyways, first 100% OC I ever did; coldbugfree AMD was cool back then.

First LN2
Session was supposed to test Blind-ripper's X6800 or E6700 (can't remember) but the chip wouldn't boot so we decided to just test my E6300 I brought along. Board went high FSB in a couple of minutes ... needless to say I was impressed. P5K Vanilla ... epic board.
http://hwbot.org/submission/615669_massman_cpu_z_core_2_e6300_1.86ghz_4375.27_mhz
Back then we hit a couple of golds, i think. No pictures of this session, I think. From that point I was hooked on LN2 benching. In 2008 I also had my first GPU and CPU/GPU LN2 combo up and running (9600GT (http://hwbot.org/submission/718650_massman_3dmark2001_se_geforce_9600_gt_87398_marks)).
Can't remember my first LN2 solo flight. Even today, I mostly do the intensive LN2 benching with friends around. I guess it'll be one of those E8500 sessions with LN2 leftovers.

First time I used anything other than air was about 18 months ago at the GOOC UK qualifiers where kitfit1 and I benched LN2 on 980X/UD7 (It was kitfit's first LN2 experience too). Even so, we managed around 5.6GHz through the benchmarks and had great fun :) Talk about jumping in at the deep end...
After that I did DICE at home a few times and had a few LN2 meets with team-mates. Since then I have got myself a pair of dewars and have done LN2 twice at home. Next delivery is in a few weeks :D
Still young, but I'm a quick learner :)

Don't know about the XXX part but yes to the rest.
benched for 2 years with phase and cascade, i interested subzero overclocking when i saw shammy pic with his cooling

April 4th 2007. Played hooky to bench and ended up failing an exam the next day partly as a result, but it was worth it. The day before was also the first time I met vinbo. I had my phone on silent or something and had him driving around the streets of crowded Ann Arbor, MI for a half hour probably in his F250 searching in vain for parking. Showed up to a Starbucks in my jammies where we hung out and Vince idolized his long time rival Overklokk. It was over four years ago, but I remember it like it was yesterday.

first Dice - March 2006, s478

And not even closed cell insulation :O
Ok, time to my zombies
First OC - AMD K6-166MMX @ 233MHz 3.3V (if I recall correctly :)) , 16MB RAM, 4GB HDD.
Then P II 400MHz on Intel CC820 motherboard, Intel 820 + memory hub for SDRAM, so no OC at all. :(
Then AMD Duron 700@850 on EPoX 8KTA3+, 16MB Riva 128ZX, was long time before I craked CPU on TT Chrome Orb :D
Then another Duron 750@900MHz on same board. Then things go like mad.
I started my university study, and was not rich at all :)
Build own trash watercooling loop from nothing.
http://xdevs.com/images/ln2_oc/000.jpg
Year 2006
Build own phase-change from nothing, spend $90 USD for everything, including "tools". Charged with automobile gas (propane/buthane mix). Got first frost -15°C, with rotary motor made in 1976 year.
http://xdevs.com/images/ln2_oc/bk.jpg
Unit was running +100°C compressor temperature, constantly overheated, barely able to hold S939 Venice on +15C :)
http://xdevs.com/images/ln2_oc/bk2.jpg
That time I was soldering 4x256MB BH-5 sticks into 2x512MB and reached 270MHz with 1.5-2-2-0 timigs at 3.85VDIMM.
http://xdevs.com/images/ln2_oc/chillytin.jpg
That time also played with chiller loops based on same crap compressor loop :D
Managed to squeeze 2,88 jiggagertz from 939 cpu :D
http://xdevs.com/images/ln2_oc/2880.jpg
Also started experimenting with embedded seriously :D
Even made JTAG dongle and tried accessing AMD S939 CPU registers. XS member njkid32 donated few dead DFI NF4 LanParties which I used in my survey. One was fixed by me then and used long time before it die from countless crazyness
http://xdevs.com/images/ln2_oc/jtag.jpg
System on photo is functional at that time, desprite of missing DDR slot :D
Then was sponsored by Topmods.NET overclockers and founder Dimdirol, BigSam evaporators and built good phasechange :D
http://xdevs.com/images/ln2_oc/chilytin.jpg
http://xdevs.com/images/ln2_oc/phase.jpg
That time got first high-end videocard from reviewing hobby for IT websites, EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB ACS3. Was cool card. Started to like EVGA products :)
http://xdevs.com/images/ln2_oc/phase2.jpg
+ My electronics hobby start to go more serious, I spent all non-overclocking time to embedded project development, soldering stuff, tracing PCB, trying to write firmware etcetcetc.
http://xdevs.com/images/ln2_oc/phase3.jpg
First project was phasechange controller.
http://xdevs.com/images/ln2_oc/phase4.jpg
2007 YEAR
Then I got hands on Core 2 Duo E6600 and P5B DLX. Oced it to every possible limit on air and that phase. That time I started to feel that it's not enough anymore and bought 16L dewar. But no money for LN2 pot (still student lol). But I wanted to try LN2 so bad, that tool copper core from Intel BOX cooler and soldered it into brass tube :D That was my first LN2 pot

2008-2009 Finished my university, got master degree on "Computer systems and networks" and moved to Ukraine capital, Kiev, for better oppotunities. Most of time spent to own xdevs.com (http://dev.xdevs.com/) project dedicated for custom embedded projects for few customers, sometimes managing to OC hardware, strictly on phase-change or LN2 only.
Build powerful phase-change rotary unit for Xtremelabs.org teammate MaJ0r. It's still rocking, and he is using it.
http://xdevs.com/images/ln2_oc/phaser.jpg
This timeframe me, cyclone, WEHR-WOLF and Drager met together in Kiev, and founded Xtremelabs.org russian-language local extreme OC community/project. Now Xtremelabs.org is best ukrainian benching team, and is known worldwide and took part in MOA's and GOOC's. Cyclone and T0lsty even got silver in 2010 MOA WW finals :).
cyclone was supporting me and helped with hardware supply for my experiments very well.
Vinbo was impressed by my fugly GPU container and 8800GTX crazy OC, and donated Tek9 Slim for my madness :)
2011-present :) Joined EVGA heaven (http://kingpincooling.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=33) :D
Rest can be found on my Dungeon here (http://kingpincooling.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=31)

My 1st dice session was in May 2005,
At that time I have no basic knowledge about extreme cooling at all and just kinda decided to do it since there's an local OC competition in my campus going on.
http://i419.photobucket.com/albums/pp275/Lucky_n00b/1st%20Dice%20Session/Binus_OC.jpg
(me was the 2nd person from the right)
My 1st pot ever ! It was just a 6mm thick copper plate, brazed with a 25cm copper tube.
http://i419.photobucket.com/albums/pp275/Lucky_n00b/1st%20Dice%20Session/1stdicepot.jpg
Rig used at that time :
http://i419.photobucket.com/albums/pp275/Lucky_n00b/1st%20Dice%20Session/Duron_DFILPB.jpg
Duron 700Mhz spitfire
DFI Lanparty NFII Ultra B
Twinmos BH-5 256MB (still alive :D)
Sis 6326 VGA
40GB IDE HDD (also still alive :p)
Thermaltake 420W PSU
Me and my friends only use lots of dielectric grease for insulation, and we cannot monitor the temperature at all since we don't have any thermal sensor.
The result, finally managed got my duron running at 1170Mhz , only to have it dead 1 hours afterward :p (too bad no cpu-z validation done)
http://i419.photobucket.com/albums/pp275/Lucky_n00b/1st%20Dice%20Session/duron1.jpg
Continuing, my friend Benny(Currently Indonesia's GigaByte Product Manager) introduced me to LN2 Cooling at the Gigabyte P35 APAC Event 2007 in Beijing. **me on the middle, you can see ZolKorn on the right :p **
http://i419.photobucket.com/albums/pp275/Lucky_n00b/1st%20Dice%20Session/TeamID.jpg
Benny was kinda like a teacher to me, and taught me many things about overclocking. In that event I also met many famous overclockers : KinC, T_M, Zolkorn, HiCookie, NightRaven, and many more.
Finally, the 1st time I use LN2 in a OC competition were with my buddy Ekky 'Jengkol' in MSI MOA 2008 Worldwide.
http://i419.photobucket.com/albums/pp275/Lucky_n00b/1st%20Dice%20Session/alva_ekky.jpg
Looking forward to my 1st time with Liquid Helium :D ( I dunno if nowadays CPU/GPU scales with LHe, I just want to try it if there's a chance :) )
