Default VID mod gtx680

Hello,

I have a reference gtx680 from msi, and it's maddening me that I can't increase the voltage. So, I'm going to replicate the VID mod that was first posted on these forums.

There's a chance i'll ruin the card but it's a chance i'm willing to take... as far as I can decipher I need:

a 7 dip switch (they're all the same right)
7 4.7k resistors (can anyone be more specific)
a 30w soldering iron (recommend a good one)
a magnifying glass (the Richtek RT8802A is tiny)

After this mod will I need to flash a new bios to the gfx card or can I just flip the 7 switches to the correct positions and be done with it? I'd be content with a 1350 - 1400 core clock. I looked at the table in the pdf for the Richtek RT8802A so I think i'll try to set it at 1.3v then use msi afterburner to push the core clock up.

It all looks quite straightforward apart from shorting vid 6 to vid 7, that's just absolutely tiny. Yes, i'm crazy and haven't soldered before, but I will practice on some laptop circuit boards before doing it on the 680. Any advice on the soldering side of things (like which solder equipment etc) would be much appreciated (such as what diameter tip would I need on the solder iron to best do this.). Thanks for advice.

Actually 6 position switch or even 5 is enough. You can use also single switches, or jumpers or anything similar. DIP switches just easy to use.

any 4.7K fixed resistors are ok, even 2.2K or 10K is ok, that is just pullup.

You don't need any new bioses to adjust voltage by VID mod. But if you don't do power modification to fool power sensing curcuitry, you will hit power limit much faster > reduce your OC.

Basically for 1400mhz you can set 1.35V or similar (just pick nearest which need less VID modding) for safety, and while you can keep GPU temps under +50c under load, you are good to go.

For QFN soldering I was using Weller iron with 2mm flat tip, but any similar can do good after some practice, so that should not be a problem.

lol.

i just finished another round of soldering practice... think id life to find some wire that is more flexible, not rigid.

all my caps, resistors, switches should be here tomorrow

For a relatively flexible wire I've had good success with stripped wires from an old PATA cable.
