I'm relatively surprised I don't see anything about software mods and tweaks here.
(Not to brag but..) I consider myself quite talented at finding the small things that all add up, I'll go as far as to strip hidden DLLs loaded during startup, remove items (often DLL based) from context menus, removing LSPs, removing network protocols, and even printer listeners. At my parents place their machine is a living miracle...a P4 (2GHz w/o Hyperthreading) with under 512mb RAM and a 6800gt (AGP 4x), that I revived after my friend killed it, is actually running Windows 7 Ultimate with all visual effects turned on. All apps run with no lag, I'm actually awaiting the day the HDD dies, lol. I believe it has the Willamette architecture...that's the 180nm one that was released with the 1st gen P4's! Crazy part is it still runs perfectly fine and there's no intention of getting it replaced until it finally dies!
